Mission Mangal actor Taapsee Pannu spoke about the difference of pay between a male actor and a female protagonist of the film. Here’s what the Badla actor had to say on it. Read on.
In a recent interview with Times of India, Taapsee spoke about pay parity and that it is the only issue which she can complain about. The Badla star acknowledged the fact that she is in a great phase of her career but also highlighted that there is a lack of pay parity in Bollywood that bothers her. Taapsee expressed that often she is asked to charge less in a film that is female-driven and that the makers want to cut costs. She even stated that there have been times that the male lead actor’s salary is the entire budget of a female-centric film. Taapsee mentioned that female actors often don’t get equally paid as male actors. Taapsee said, “A hero’s salary is equal to an entire budget of a female-driven film. Usme bhi mujhe bola jata hai, aap thoda kam charge kar lona. Cost-cutting karenge kyunki yeh female-centric film hai, mainstream nahin. These things hurt a bit. If you are cast in a film where a woman has an equal part as the man, if not more, you don’t get a male A-lister who will be okay to share screen space with you. If women are cast as the protagonists in a film, the male actors who play their partners are never A-listers. On the contrary, girls are ready to play smaller parts opposite top male actors. These things bother me.” Meanwhile, Mission Mangal is completely based on the story of the team of female scientists behind the success of India Space Research Organisation’s MOM aka Mangalyaan. Taapsee along with other actors has been promoting the film. Directed by Jagan Shakti, Mission Mangal is produced by Akshay Kumar and R Balki and the trailers of the film have been loved. Now, it is slated to hit the screens on August 15, 2019.
